Masonry Veneer

Veneer is a nonstructural facing of brick, stone, concrete masonry or other masonry material securely attached to a wall or backing. Veneers provide the exterior wall finish and transfer out-of-plane loads directly to the backing, but they are not considered to add to the load resisting capacity of the wall system.

For the purposes of design, veneer is assumed to support no load other than its own weight. The backing must be designed to support the vertical and lateral loads imposed by the veneer in addition to the design loads on the wall since it is assumed the veneer does not add to the strength of the wall.

Masonry LEED Projects Call Entries

The Ohio Masonry Association has issued a “Call for Entries” for Masonry LEED projects that have received their LEED certification. OMA is developing a LEED publication to showcase Ohio projects that have received LEED certification using masonry as a structural and aesthetic component. Projects submitted will be assessed by OMA and may be used in a future OMA publication. Each project you enter will also be automatically entered into the 2011 Excellence in Masonry Awards competition in the Masonry LEED Category to be held in February 2011.

Submission qualifications are as follows:
  1. Copy of LEED Certification;
  2. Pictures of the finished project (minimum 10 outside, 6 inside) of print quality;
  3. Write-up of the project’s use, LEED qualifications, use of masonry;
  4. Supplier/manufacturer of the masonry products;
  5. Copy of the wall section showing masonry as the primary structural component.
Please contact the Ohio Masonry Association and request a “Call for Entries” form. All pictures and submission documentation becomes the property of the Ohio Masonry Association and may be used in print and or web based publications. This program offers designers a chance to be recognized by the masonry industry, design community and the public. Please take time to review your projects and contact OMA to see if your project qualifies.
